insight into daily life

PsyMate™ is an app for iPhone and Android smartphones, developed to map your thoughts, feelings and behavior in daily life. Scientific research shows that this helps you to get a grip on physical and psychological symptoms. As a result, you will feel better!

The PsyMate™ app beeps a few times a day at random moments during this day. When it beeps, you are asked to fill in several questions at that moment. Where are you? What are you doing? How do you feel? After collecting some data, the responses are presented in clear graphs and diagrams. Over time, you can link activities and feelings. You will see, for example, in which circumstances you feel better or worse. You can choose to use PsyMate™ as a personal initiative and invite others to discuss your results (for instance your therapist).

PsyMate™ for you?

I want to use PsyMate™ myself.

As a therapist / general practioner, I want to make the PsyMate™ available to my clients.

As a scientist/researcher, I want to use PsyMate™ in my studies.

I want to try a free demo (available for iPhone/Android).

What's PsyMate?

Everyone can use PsyMate™ to explore his or her mental state and/or to better understand psychological and physical complaints. We have developed a free basic module that assesses mental state and well-being in daily life, which is a good way to explore what PsyMate™ can do for you. Your individual PsyMate™ data remain strictly personal. If you want, you can choose yourself to share your results with your doctor or psychologist (or friends and family).

In addition to our basic module, we have developed other modules for specific purposes (e.g. a module that can be helpful while recovering from psychotic episodes). Please feel free to contact us via info@psymate.eu.

I want to use PsyMate myself

What is recovery? It often means learning how to cope with physical symptoms and psychological vulnerabilities. The PsyMate™ can be a valuable addition to self-evaluation, or a support to treatment. The PsyMate™ team can customize the PsyMate™ app to the specific needs of your clients. Using PsyMate™, the treatment process becomes more personalized and it improves engagement and collaboration, which positively influences treatment duration. Completing the momentary questionnaires takes little time (aproximately 1 minute per assessment) and proved hardly a burden for most clients. Moreover, the use is simple, practical and reliable. We emphasize that individual PsyMate™ data remain strictly personal. However, your client can share and discuss his results with you.

Are you interested in using PsyMate™? Please feel free to contact us at info@psymate.eu.

I am a therapist / general practioner

"PsyMate™ provides reliable information that helps me to focus my treatment to specific complaints. In addition, the therapy continues beyond the therapy session, because clients tend to become more conscious about their feelings in real life. After a while this is preventive: dynamic actions can be taken at the first sign of increase in symptoms."

The Experience Sampling Method (ESM), or Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), is a highly reliable structural diary method that provides insight into how people function in normal daily life. The PsyMate™ app and data management system is an important improvement in ESM study logistics and can easily be customized for specific research projects. The app is suitable for large study populations, as well as for the so-called n = 1 studies. In medicine, PsyMate™ can be applied to measure the influence of medication, stress, or pain in daily life. More generally, the PsyMate™ is valuable for all research questions relating mental states or emotions to the (social) context. Various (inter)national research institutions already use the PsyMate™ for years.

We emphasize that individual PsyMate™ data remain strictly personal. In scientific research respondents give informed consent allowing the researchers to use the data in their studies. Individual patient data remains anonymous and are never shared with third parties.

Are you interested in using PsyMate™ for your research project? Please do not hesitate to contact us at info@psymate.eu.

I am a scientist/ researcher

"I used PsyMate in a so called n=1 study to optimize the dose of anti-depressants: with optimal being low enough to avoid side effects and high enough to be allow to function properly."

Scientific vision

The PsyMate™ app was developed by the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Maastricht University as a tool to get a grip on psychological problems in everyday life. Assessment instruments for depression, bipolar disorder and psychosis have been thoroughly and scientifically tested. Additional ESM scales for Parkinson's disease, pain, cardiology, hypertension, diabetes and Irritable Bowel Syndrome are under development. If you're interested, don't hesitate to contact us to discuss how we can help you to implement PsyMate™ solutions in your study or practice.

PsyMate™ as a diagnostic self-management tool

Ambulatory assessment in healthcare is not new. Consider, for example, the measurement and monitoring of blood-pressure. A similar mobile ambulatory measurement system exists in mental healthcare: the experience sampling method (ESM).

ESM uses repeated measurements to assess experiences, such as mood, motivation, and stress-sensitivity, in its context (activity, company, location) at random moments during daily life.
The collected data provide personalized insight in daily life functioning and experienced stress. These momentary assessments reveal subtle, repetitive patterns of experiences in response to environmentally or mentally induced cues. These cannot be adequately measured by retrospective assessments or clinical interviews. Looking at the film of daily life, instead of snapshots, can reveal important information on processes and mechanisms that are relevant in treatment and assessment of mental disorders.

Monitoring treatment and medication

Monitoring experiences in daily life can be used to gain insight in long-term mood, motivation and, salience (relevant for psychosis-proneness) patterns. Within mental healthcare few systems are available to monitor medication or psychotherapy effects as it impacts on daily life. The PsyMate™ can be used for this purpose, improving the search for optimal medication dosage and offering content for the psychotherapy process.

Prevention

Given the substantial risks of developing chronic psychological problems, subtle changes in frequency of occurrence and resulting invalidation of psychoses or depression (monitoring rest symptoms) following remission of psychological disorders, can be indicative for the onset of new episodes. Psychological disorders are too costly for society to only invest in treatment; there is also a high need to focus on prevention. New strategies are needed for long-term treatment of subclinical symptoms and rest symptoms. In particular, we need strategies that focus on self-management of symptoms in recovered patients. The PsyMate™ can improve self-management of emotional dysregulation to supplement professional care. It is a realistic and cost-effective option for empowering citizens at risk for mental illness.

The user is in control

Treatment customization in regular mental healthcare often uses superficial information. How are you? Are you feeling better? The clinician has to rely on the patient’s memory and make decisions on medication changes, supplementing unreliable user data with expert knowledge. While the patient is expert in his or her own life, communicating relevant information is not easy. The PsyMate™ helps to make that transparent: “Sunday I felt anxious; Monday afternoon I felt relaxed”. The continual information that somebody gathers can be used as to decide whether a treatment is effective. PsyMate™ empowers both patient and clinicians in shared decision making.

Systematic sampling of mental state in context will raise awareness on the nature of symptoms, and patterns of changes over time within the context in which they occur. Patients become actively involved in their recovery process and more insight is offered in personal strengths and weaknesses. In other words: PsyMate™ helps patients to help themselves.

PsyMate™ offers promising opportunities for future healthcare! More and more people with disabilities remain independent and live at home. Solutions should be found for their mental and physical vulnerabilities. The PsyMate™ can be a valuable help. Feel free to start immediately with our free demo module by downloading the app and choosing the iPhone / Android icon. Contact us for specific customized modules.

We kindly invite you to send us your suggestions and wishes to improve the PsyMate™.

Of course, we can collaboratively develop tailor-made modules and provide these to users!
